Barn Restoration Grants in Ontario

If you own an older barn in Ontario, and are thinking of restoring it, there may be grant money available to you. Most grants require your barn or property to be designated as a heritage property to qualify. To learn more about heritage designations and what they involve, click here. Read on to find out about restoration grants in Ontario.

Designated Heritage Property Grant

– Up to $3,000, Kitchener, ON

The city of Kitchener offers a grant program to owners of Kitchener’s designated heritage properties to help ease the financial burden of conserving our cultural heritage resources.

How Much Is The Grant?

Subject to available funding, the grant can cover up to half of the cost of eligible conservation work up to a maximum of $3,000 per property per year.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible for this grant if you are the owner of a property which has been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

What Types of Repairs Qualify?

  • Restoration of original doors, windows, masonry, roofing materials, and significant features
  • Restoration of original building features using precise materials, sizes, and details
  • Restoration of documented architectural features that have been lost

Tips On How To Apply

Submit your application to the heritage planning team before the last business day of March in the calendar year that you plan on doing the restorations.

Heritage Building Improvement Grant Program

– Up to $5,000, London, ON

How Much Is The Grant?

The city of London offers a grant of half of the cost of eligible improvements on heritage properties to a maximum of $5,000 as part of a revitalizing effort for the city centre.

Who Is Eligible?

  • Properties not in tax arrears
  • Registered owners of designated heritage properties
  • The property must be located in the Heritage Community Improvement Project Area as explained in Section 2.2 and in the Appendix of the Development Plan.

What Types Of Repairs Qualify?

All repairs must preserve the structure’s designated features and be sensitive to its historic context.

Tips On How To Apply

All applications must be submitted to municipal staff of the city of London including:

  • name and address of applicant
  • legal property description
  • description of the proposed development work
  • cost estimate

Heritage Grant Program & Heritage Tax Rebate Program

-Tax Rebates – Toronto, ON

How Much Is The Grant?

The city of Toronto offers a grant program of up to 50% of the estimated cost of eligible heritage conservation work. It also offers a tax rebate of up to 40% on property taxes on heritage portions of the property.

Who Qualifies?

  • Property located in the city of Toronto
  • Properties designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
  • Residential or tax exempt properties

What Repairs Qualify?

The following repairs may qualify:

  • Repairing existing windows and doors
  • Exterior repairs of existing heritage materials such as masonry, porches, wood work and slate roofs
  • Reconstruction of significant architectural features

How to Apply

Submit your fully completed application to:

Your application must include:

  • Completed application form
  • Three quotes or estimates
  • Recent photographs of the property
  • Signed copy of the city of Toronto’s Declaration of a Non-Discrimination Policy
